America's Independence Day

Last Friday was the 4th of July. What's special about that day? The 4th of July is America's Independence Day! You can say that July 4th is America's birthday!

On the 4th of July, Americans often meet with friends and family. They watch fireworks and enjoy barbecue. Some people watch professional fireworks shows, while others buy their own fireworks. Buying your own fireworks can be fun and exciting, but also dangerous.

Why do Americans celebrate the 4th of July? This has to do with history. Before 1776, the United States of America wasn't a country. America was part of England at that time. But the people in America wanted to make their own country. They wanted independence. On July 2nd, 1776, they decided to become independent from England. They wrote a paper called the Declaration of Independence, and signed it on July 4th. That's why Americans celebrate on the 4th.

Some other countries have their own Independence Day celebrations. Canada's is on July 1st. Mexico celebrates on September 16th. Other countries, like Japan, have no independence day. These countries have always had independence.

If you are in the United States on July 4th, you should watch fireworks!
